Looking for a mild and easy green salsa recipe? This is an authentic mexican recipe that you can add to your tacos or serve with chips. It’s full of spice and flavor! You can kick up the spicy twist by keeping more of the seeds from the serrano chile peppers. My family loves to use green salsa as a topping for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Depending on how much the produce cost is at your local market, on average, you can purchase the ingredients and make one pound of green salsa for under $1.50 and it can be stored when refrigerated. Make this salsa for any occasion and you’ll stay within your grocery budget and have plenty for a few days.

When roasting your peppers and green tomatillo (tomato) your house may stir up pepper fumes and unexpected coughing from your family, it’s normal. You’ll possibly feel like you’re choking 😜 with the roasting pepper fumes, just start up your stove top vent, open up some windows or turn up that air conditioning unit.

  • 8 Tomatillo (small green husk tomato) peeled and rinsed
  • 1 Garlic Clove (not the whole bulb) finely minced
  • 6 Serrano Chiles rinsed thoroughly
  • 1 Cilantro bunch rinsed and finely chopped
  • 2 cups Water
  • 1 Onion rinsed and finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp Salt Optional: Add more or Less, to taste


  • Wrap a metal griddle with aluminum foil, place it on your stove top on medium high.
  • Place your green tomatoes (tomatillo) and serrano chiles on the griddle to toast thoroughly.
  • Frequently turn them so that they're toasted evenly.
  • Once they're fully toasted, remove seeds from the chile serrano peppers.
  • Then place the chile serrano peppers, tomatillo, chopped onion, chopped cilantro, minced garlic clove and salt into your blender.
  • Add 2 cups of water, more or less based on the consistency that you prefer.
  • Serve with Chips or as a topping.
  • Refrigerate remaining salsa in a mason jar to keep it fresh.
 Recipe Tip: If you want to spice up this recipe, you’ll want to keep more of the Chile Serrano Pepper seeds. Removing the seeds will keep it mild.
