Visiting Pismo Beach Oceano Dunes has always been one of my best childhood memories. Camping and off roading at Pismo Beach, California – Oceano Dunes is family (& pet) friendly. While growing up, I could feel the salty beach wind sprinkle sand across my face, my hair would be wild and messy. The shore was filled with campfires and loud engines roaring. We’d run out to the ocean and jump straight into the freezing water, not having a care in the world. Those were some of the best childhood memories I’ve ever had. We were away from home, with limited or minimal items and entertained ourselves with great conversations, the beach, or with my dads off roading adventures.
It’s either a hit or miss when it comes to the weather. We arrived to a nice sunny day and then suddenly the wind kicked up, that didn’t keep us from 4wheeling the dunes.
My brother took his Bronco and got stuck in this little slope area, his tires where just thrashing in further as he kept revving the engine. We have a few extra tow ropes and pulled out the Bronco with the Jeep Wrangler.
Suggested Clothing for Pismo Beach
- Beanies / Hats
- Boots / Comfy old shoes
- Jeans and Sweatpants (for the night, it gets cold)
- Sweaters and Jackets
- Swimsuits / Shorts
Gear up your off-road vehicles and toys, you can ride the dunes because it’s a designated OHV area! If you’re closer to Los Angeles County, you should check out Rowher Flats! I wrote a post about introducing kids to riding dirtbikes , and that location is a perfect spot with flat land.
Recommended for a family who is going to full out TENT camp at the beach, these are the items you don’t want to forget.
Camping You Want to Take
- Baby Wipes to keep with you for the restroom trips
- A family tent that will comfortable fit your kids and pets
- Folding tables and Camping Chairs
- Portable Propane Grill
- Sleeping Bags
- Emergency Kit
- Flashlights and Lanterns, you’ll want plenty of these!
I hope this motivates you to get out there, explore the beach and new places with your family. It’s awesome to disconnect and make memories with your children. This place holds a special place in my heart, it’s the first location where I went camping with my dad.
